PostHeaderIcon Additional Accessories For Use With A Digital Camera

As with any purchase made these days, additional accessories are available to ‘enhance’ the experience of using the purchased product. Digital Cameras are no exception, and there are countless accessories available. The purpose of this article is to guide you through this ‘commercial maze’ so that you only end up purchasing digital camera accessories which are truly useful.

If your camera was purchased in North America or in any Duty Free Shop (DFS) at any international airport, most accessories are included in the original purchase. One exception could be the memory card. (Memory cards, like analogue film in non-digital cameras, are used to store images.) That said, at the time of purchase, its worth asking whether they can ‘throw in’ a free memory card to secure the sale. You will be surprised as to how many times they do just that! Other accessories – which may be included in the sale – are:

Battery Charger

Some of the more basic Digital Cameras use standard AA Batteries. These standard batteries have a short life, maybe only 20 or 30 photos before needing replacement. A more cost-effective solution would be to use rechargeable NiMH or Lithium batteries. A standard battery charger is required to recharge them. The more expensive cameras usually have in-builtrechargeable batteries which can be re-charged with the provided attachment.

Carry Case

There is an extensive range of Digital Camera Carry Cases. Generic brands offer the best value. Make sure that the carry case offers adequate protection, prevents accidental photo
taking, and is easy to carry.

USB Cable

The USB Cable is used to attach your camera to a PC so that you can download your digital photos on your computer. This is useful for modifying/ enhancing the photo (using software such as Photoshop Elements or the free Google Picasso)

Interchangeable Lenses

Most SLR Digital Cameras have the ability to change lenses. A standard lens is best for most situations. A wide-angle lens for taking photos in confined spaces, while a telephoto lens is used for taking photo at a distance from the subject. Zoom lenses offer the best of both worlds in that the focal length can vary – it can be both a wide angle and telephoto lens. While the quality of Digital Zoom Lenses is generally quite good, you will always get better results with a high quality fixed focal length lens.

PostHeaderIcon Digital Cameras – A Brief History

Have you ever wondered exactly what a digital camera does, how much it costs, or what its functions are? Then this article is for you. Digital cameras are the main thing that you will need if you are interested in digital photography and wish to take it to the next level. A good digital camera will remove the agony from trying to take the best photograph!

It’s due to the NASA’s space program that digital cameras were invented. The first space missions made use of TV vacuum tubes – these were the forefathers of the modern digital cameras. In the early 1970′s new developments saw dramatic advancements in this technology.

While digital cameras may look like to leverage 35mm traditional camera they can be a bit smaller. Instead of using regular film they use a computer chip to capture the image. Therefore, these cameras can take many more images as compared to a regular camera using traditional film. Instead of getting the film processed after you have finished shooting all photographs, with a digital camera you can download the photographs immediately using a serial cable to your computer.

Digital cameras are now becoming very popular with amateur and professional photographers. The technology is getting better and cheaper. The quality and reliability of these cameras continue to change the way we take photographs. There is now no difference between the image taken on a digital camera and a traditional camera.

Are you ready to buy your first digital camera? One things to consider is the price, but even more importantly is the features you require. This will help you make the most of your hobby. If you are using your camera as a fun item, you will not need to many features – but if you are a professional photographer it is important to seek a camera which offers all the features you require.

Features which you should consider include digital camera resolution or DPI. The higher than that the young the better the quality of the photographs. Other features are the size of camera, whether or not it has a zoom lens, whether the lens is interchangeable, and finally the amount of storage available on the camera.

PostHeaderIcon The Digital Darkroom Hints

The ever improving evolution in the area of digital photography is now making it possible for your special photographs to be captured in greater detail and better accuracy than ever before. Improved shutter speeds and photographic resolution insure that amateur and seasoned professionals now have the ability to take truly outstanding photographs. In addition, advanced editing capabilities available through digital imaging technology – or the digital darkroom – give the dedicated photographer the ability to create a true masterpiece.

We all known that there is just a small window or of opportunity to get that truly great photograph – be it a sporting event or a still life photograph in a studio. Your hands and fingers must work simultaneously and with accurate timing, and in conjunction with your intuitive sense of when to take the photographs. For photography is truly an art form!

Usually our photographs have just some of the key elements required for that ideal shot. But more often than not, it’s limited in some areas. For example, the subject may be well-framed but then the lighting is not 100%. Or the lighting is good, but the subject is looking in the wrong direction! This is exactly where modern digital photography comes in its own, giving you the tools via your ‘digital darkroom’ to create that perfect photograph. Because… in just seconds, all pictures can be edited to reach their full potential when created with a digital camera. Red-eye reduction, automatic color enhancement, crop and zoom features are some of the many fantastic features that digital photography has to offer. Taking outstanding pictures is now easier than ever.

The truth is that digital photography is possible without a digital camera. You can use a regular camera such as a standard single lens reflex camera, process the film, and then scan the film and store the digital images on a CD. You can now use exactly the same software to edit your images.

All the equipment you need for digital photography is available online (stores or ebay) or from your local retail shop. Besides the camera and accessories you also need the software to create a digital darkroom. Adobe Elements and the free Picasso program from Google is what you are after. Good luck!

PostHeaderIcon Facts About Lenses For Digital Cameras

The thing which confuses most people is that lenses for digital cameras are quite different from the older, and perhaps more familiar, 35mm cameras. The reason for this is that digital cameras, especially Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras, have sensors much smaller than traditional cameras. For example, the diagonal of most sensors is almost twice as small as 35mm film!

Now if you were using a regular 35mm lens on a digital camera, the smaller sensor would capture only the middle portion of the projected image. This will effectively crop the image, so you will need a lens with a larger focal length to create the same effect. We use the term ‘Focal Length Multiplier’ (or FLM) to convert between digital and 35mm format. For example: a Digital telephoto 200mm lens with a FLM of 1.5 is equivalent to a super-telephoto 300mm (200 x 1.5) lens on a 35mm film.

The better digital SLR cameras are able to use conventional 35mm lenses. Besides the problem with image size, these older lenses are significantly heavier than there digital equivalents.

In the pre-digital world, names such as Karl Zeiss were famous the world over for high quality lenses. You still get these brands today, but they are probably over-rated and certainly don’t justify there high price-tag. Brands such as Canon and Nikon are getting a superb reputation for high quality digital lenses. These lenses also have features which are particularly useful for digital photographers, features such as auto-focus and vibration reduction.

Cleaning Digital Camera lenses is no different to cleaning the lenses of regular cameras: you can purchase a purpose-built lens cleaning kit from camera stores or online at ebay or amazon. Alternatively, use a cotton swab with some alcohol. Clean in a circular motion, and don’t apply too much pressure.

Finally, we consider repairing or maintaining lenses. The most common problem is removing scratches on lenses. Follow these steps: dismantle lens and each lens element, locate the scratch, you might get away with a simple repolish , otherwise you’ll need to reground or replace it, reassemble the lens. You might also need to Relaminate the lens grouping.

PostHeaderIcon Features To Look For In Digital Cameras

In many ways Digital cameras are a paradigm shift from the ’old-world’ cameras in that they offer a host of features and functions not generally available in the latter. This array of features can be a bit daunting to the first time uninformed buyer of Digital Cameras. In this article we will examine the features found in the best digital cameras.

Digital Camera Resolution

Digital camera resolution is a very important factor to take into account when deciding what camera to buy. All photographs are comprised of tiny dots, or ‘pixels’. The more the dots, the sharper the image. Take a snap at 100 dots per inch (dpi ) will comprise of 100 by 100 pixels over that inch. This may look OK if you only wanted a photo one inch big, but enlarge it to four square inches and your photo will look grainy. This is because the image still contains the same 100 by 100 dots over a bigger area.

Digital Camera image resolution is measured in Megapixels. One Megapixel comprises of a million pixels or dots. The higher the Megapixel count, the better quality of the photograph. When buying a digital camera, you should aim for as high a Megapixel count as you can afford – never purchase a camera less than 1 Megapixel.

Digital Camera Storage

This is the digital equivalent of film in the older non-digital cameras. Storage is usually in the form of memory cards. One big advantage of memory cards over conventional film is that, unlike analogue film, you can use memory sticks repeatedly. Furthermore, memory cards can generally store more photos than film. There are many types of cards available and not all types of cards can be used with all brands of cameras.

The most common types of cards are Compact Flash Cards, SmartMedia Cards, XD Flash Memory Cards, Memory Sticks, and IBM Flash Memory Cards. In a future article we will go through the pros and cons of the different types of cards. But for now, just ensure that the digital camera you purchase has at least 32 MB of storage.

Size

Size does count – but in this case, the smaller the better! Marketing of Digital Cameras refer to three sizes: compact, standard and professional. Compact cameras are ‘small and light’ and can usually fit into your pocket. Professional cameras are usually larger (generally the same size as the non-digital equivalent) with many features, such as interchangeable lenses, which professional photographers use. These cameras are not recommended for beginners as they can be quite complex to operate. Standard cameras are the most common format, and most digital cameras sold these days fall in this category.

Digital Camera Zoom lenses

A zoom lens gives you the ability to change the ‘focal length’ of the lens. This allows you to take photos where the image is far away (telephoto) or in confined spaces (wide-angle lens). There are two types of zoom lenses – optical and digital zoom lenses. Optical zoom is what you should be after, as this measures the ability of the camera’s lens to capture more light and more detail. This provides for higher quality pictures. Digital zooms capture the central portion of the image and crop as necessary, resulting in a lower quality picture.

PostHeaderIcon Buying Digital Cameras At Wholesale Prices

Conventional wisdom is that wholesale is better than retail because it offers the identical item (eg. Digital Camera) at a significantly lower cost than buying that item at a retail store. This is probably true, but there are some disadvantages of buying a Digital Camera at a wholesaler. It’s worth mentioning these disadvantages before continuing with our discussion on how to buy that camera from a wholesale supplier.

Wholesale is not always ‘significantly’ cheaper than retail anymore for big-ticket (ie. expensive) items such as DSLR cameras. Bulk warehouse type retail stores often offer these items as loss leaders in a practice called ‘headlining’. They put a very small margin on the main item sold, and then plan to sell the accessories such as memory cards, carry cases, chargers, or interchangeable lenses at full retail price. There profit is all in the accessories. So, if you are not planning on purchasing these, it might be just as cheap – and more convenient – in buying your camera from this type of store.

If you decide to purchase wholesale, you need to establish yourself as a ‘credible’ wholesaler. You need to do this because wholesale suppliers protect their genuine customers (retail stores) by not selling directly to the public. Strictly speaking, the public should buy at retail stores, not wholesale suppliers!

One obvious thing which will certainly blow your cover is if you ask product-specific questions at the time of purchase. To get the answers to these questions, its best if you do your homework by either asking these questions to retailers who sell the item, or to contact the wholesaler anonymously by telephone and ask those questions. The other give away is your method of payment. Genuine customers of wholesalers never pay by credit card, cash or paypal! Get yourself a business checking account, and offer to pay by company check. This is surprisingly easy to do. A visit to your local bank and a friendly chat with your bank manager is usually all you need to do.

The final item we need to cover is where to find that wholesale supplier. Try google or even the old fashioned paper-based yellow pages! There are some trade portals such as Alibaba.com. But be sure to check that the supplier is legitimate before making any payment! Some well-known wholesale suppliers of digital cameras are Tiger Direct and Costco.com.

There are many point and shoot cameras that are very user friendly and easy to handle. There are those professional cameras that have so many features that each and every picture taken is like magic as it looks artistic and even the most ugly person becomes beautiful. Of course these cameras would need more teaching and more learning but the effort for learning these features are worth it.

The point is whatever camera that you are aiming to have, it is affordable because it is wholesale. So you have the option to buy it wholesale and save money which is the more practical way to live these days.

PostHeaderIcon Digital Memory Cards Reviewed

This article will review the different types of memory cards available today for digital photography. In particular, it will recommend what is the best card for your specific circumstances.

First, a question: do you think it makes a difference what size card you use? The answer is a clear and nambiguous ‘yes’. It could well be the difference between getting that elusive photograph or having insufficient space on your memory card capacity so that you do not get to take that photo.

When selecting the best size, consider the number of photographs you usually take during each of your photographic sessions. If you usually take overseas travel pictures, family snapshots, studio portrait or still life photographs your needs will vary quite considerably. You also need to decide how large the image files are. If your photographs will primarily be used for online publication, you can get away with a smaller resolution. This will allow you to fit more photographs on a card. However, if you intend to print your photographs you will require higher resolution which will result in fewer photographs being able to be stored on the card.

Here are some rough guidelines:

* For a 2 mega-pixel camera – allow for a 128MB card. This can store up to 45 large, uncompressed images or up to 100 small, compressed images. This is probably adequate for most photographic situations.

*For a 3 to 5 mega-pixel camera – allow for a 256 MB card. This can store up to 100 large, uncompressed images or almost 200 smaller, compressed images. Significant events such as weddings or other not-to-be-missed occasions would justify the use of this card.

It is important to understand that first is just a Guide. There is nothing stopping you having a set of memory cards of different sizes. You can then choose the most appropriate for a specific situation. Memory card are continually coming down in price, of small and portable, are interchangeable, and most importantly – can be reused. So, don’t get locked into a particular card. It’s best to make your decision based on the situation you find yourself in.
